{"id":617,"date":"2013-01-13T00:16:37","date_gmt":"2013-01-13T00:16:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/?p=617"},"modified":"2014-10-12T01:21:30","modified_gmt":"2014-10-12T01:21:30","slug":"hmong-pe-po","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/hmong-pe-po\/","title":{"rendered":"Hmong pe-po"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite experience in Vietnam was visiting the Hmong people in Sapa. \u00a0Their life and world is so unique and so different than my own it&#8217;s almost unbelievable that our two worlds exist on the same planet. \u00a0In the below pic, we are standing among some of the grown women of the village, i.e., they are short:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030666.e.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[617]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-599\" title=\"Hmong people\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030666.e-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030666.e-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030666.e-450x300.jpg 450w, http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030666.e.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They live in Northern Vietnam, next to China, and over the centuries, they&#8217;ve built spectacular terraces to grow rice and feed the surrounding villages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030679.e.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[617]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-597\" title=\"sapa rice terraces\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030679.e-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030679.e-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030679.e-450x300.jpg 450w, http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030679.e.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I asked our guide (woman to the right of me in the above picture with the green head scarf) how they grow and harvest the crops. \u00a0She said there are multiple rice harvests per year. The villagers walk the roaming buffalo across the terraces to perform the function of plowing. \u00a0They plant the rice, divert the river to keep water flowing into their patties, and everyone helps. \u00a0She said it&#8217;s hard work. \u00a0She lives in a village with minimal electricity and running water, when she says something is hard work, it must be incredibly hard.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-style: normal; line-height: 24px; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030739.e.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[617]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-604\" style=\"border-color: #bbbbbb; margin-top: 0.4em; background-color: #eeeeee;\" title=\"roaming buffalo\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030739.e-300x175.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030739.e-300x175.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030739.e-500x293.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.craigpratsch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1030739.e.jpg 819w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I asked her what is the furthest place she&#8217;s traveled to, fully expecting an answer of no further than Hanoi (closest big city) or China, which is about 20 miles away. \u00a0Her response shocked me. \u00a0She said she&#8217;s never been out of the valley we were in! \u00a0The furthest place she ever walks, is to the hotel where she picked us up, on foot, to trek us down to her village.
